Mindfulness Meditation Practice - Thursday, 19 October 2017
                   Happy Diwali!

Happy Diwili 2017
Om ~ Ragani

OM is the symbol of the universal heartbeat; it is not a word. And as you come closer and closer to the universal heartbeat, the by-product is a deepening silence. Shantih means silence and it is always repeated three times because by the time you reach to the fourth, you are no more – just the silence has remained. You have disappeared as an entity separate from the universe.  www.cdbaby.com/cd/ragani3

Mindfulness practice couldn't be simpler: pay attention to the breath, and when your attention wanders, return. By following these simple steps, you can get to know yourself up close and personal. The essential meditation is Silence. We are made of sound and silence. Sound is our mind; silence is our being. Sound is our trouble; silence is our liberation. All other meditations are different forms of witnessing, but witnessing is present in every kind of meditation as an essential part. Vipassana Page

I Always Thought that I Loved Somebody ~ OSHO
In this talk, 'I Always thought That I Loved Somebody', Osho with his singular perspective, points out, amongst his other insights, that love is not a commodity but a quality of being.  "The basic fallacy that you are carrying within you is that you always loved somebody. This is one of the most significant things about all human beings; their love is always for somebody, it is addressed -- and the moment you address your love, you destroy it. It is as if you are saying, "I will breathe only for you -- and when you are not there, then how can I breathe?"  www.youtube.com/watch

Root Chakra Meditation
The root chakra or base chakra is the 1st chakra and the most important one. The color is red. and is located at the base of your spine. The root chakra stands for security, safety and basic needs, like clothing money etc. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on7xrQFPt0M&sns=em

Chakra Map ~ Osho
A short talk on the Indian Yoga Chakra Map and the Chinese Taoist Energy Map. "According to the Taoist mapping of inner consciousness there are seven holes. That is exactly the same as seven chakras. Each Taoist hole is concerned with one chakra of yoga. There are seven chakras: MULADHAR, SVADHISTHAN, MANIPURA, ANAHAT, VISHUDDHI, AJNA, SAHASRAR. These seven chakras of yoga are concerned with each hole in the heart. When you pass through one chakra then one hole opens in the heart; when you pass through the second chakra, the second hole opens in the heart; when you pass through the third chakra, the third hole opens in the heart. In yoga they have not talked about those seven holes because that will make it very confusing and complex. There is no need. One map is enough." This excerpt is from Chapter 9 of "Tao The Pathless Path" Volume 2 by Osho. www.oshoworld.com

Metta (Loving Kindness) Meditation ~ Sharon Salzberg

When you give your fullest attention to whoever you are interacting with, you take past and future out of the relationship, except for practical matters. When you are fully present with everyone you meet, you relinquish the conceptual identity you made for them — your interpretation of who they are and what they did in the past — and are able to interact without the egoic movements of desire and fear. Attention, which is alert stillness, is the key. www.youtube.com/watch

Zen: The Goose is Out - Part 2 of 2 ~ Osho
The basic thing to be understood is that you are not the mind. Guided Loving Kindness (Metta) Meditation ~ Tara Brach
Metta practice, also called lovingkindness meditation, cultivates both a loving heart and a collected, settled mind.  The practice uses specific phrases to send loving and kind wishes to yourself, loved ones, neutral persons, difficult people and to all beings everywhere, without exception. You might choose three or four of the below, or create whatever phrases resonate for you:

May I be filled with loving kindness
May I feel safe from harm.
May I accept myself just as I am.
May I be peaceful and at ease.
May I be happy.

Spend a few minutes or more offering the phrases to yourself, taking the time to imagine and directly feel the experience the phrases invoke.  Then do the same as you offer it to the others mentioned above. You can bring in the metta practice at the beginning, end or during any part of the meditation.  For some people, it can be beneficial to emphasize metta as a primary practice—especially when there has been trauma or great self-aversion.  This skilful means is a beautiful way to awaken the heart.

Unconditioned Consciousness and the Power of Now ~ Eckhart Tolle
For many thousands of years, we have lived identified with the conditioned mind, deriving from it a narrow and ultimately illusory sense of self, a "little me" — always struggling, fearful, uneasy, in conflict with itself and others. We are now opening into our natural state of "self," oneness with Being — the vast realm of consciousness or universal intelligence itself, of which the thinking mind is only a tiny aspect. This is the realm of inner stillness from where all the things arise that make life worth living: creativity, peace, aliveness, joy, love.  http://wenku.baidu.com/

Meditation is enjoying oneself, just sitting silently doing nothing: happy, joyous without any reason, because all reasons come from outside. Mantrica ~ Anant Jesse
Like a fresh and unbidden breeze from the East, it transfers their subtle fragrances into the concrete jungles and living rooms of our 21st century, hidden inside poppy wrappers that appeal to our modern ears and short attention spans. This place is vibrating with the undercurrent and legacy of millions of Sadhus, monks, Yogis and devotees who have whispered or sung these mantras for thousands of years in temples, in forests, in caves, on mountain tops and with the inner tongue on the rooftops of their minds.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?

Om Chant
OM is the symbol of the universal heartbeat; it is not a word. And as you come closer and closer to the universal heartbeat, the by-product is a deepening silence. Shantih means silence and it is always repeated three times because, by the time you reach to the fourth, you are no more – just the silence has remained. You have disappeared as an entity separate from the universe.  www.youtube.com/watch

John Main's Teaching On Meditation ~ Laurence Freeman
John Main OSB (1926-1982) was born in London on 21 January 1926. While attached to the Governor General’s office in Malaya during the Emergency he learned from Swami Satyananda how to meditate and took up the discipline of silence, stillness and simplicity as part of his Christian faith and daily prayer. In 1975 he opened the first Christian Meditation Centre at Ealing Abbey in London and began what was to be the culminating mission of his lifelong search for God and service of others. Realising that this way of the prayer of the heart could guide the search for many modern people for deeper spiritual experience, he recommended two regular daily periods of meditation to be integrated with the usual practices of Christian life. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Secret of Authentic Happiness - Martin Seligman
In this animated book review, we cover the big idea that happiness stems from applying your signature strengths in your daily life. Being happy and living a fulfilled life is simply finding what you’re good at and using it to benefit the world. This new positive psychology from Authentic Happiness can be used in anybody’s life to generate and creative positive and blissful emotions. Hedonistic happiness can be found all over the world, with people finding quick means to an end, but lasting happiness must be created by finding your purpose. This goes the other way too, trying to make someone happy can be very difficult unless you can make them feel they have a certain purpose.  www.youtube.com/watch?

Action for Happiness
We all want to live happy and fulfilling lives and we want the people we love to be happy too. So happiness matters to all of us. Happiness is about our lives as a whole: it includes the fluctuating feelings we experience everyday but also our overall satisfaction with life. It is influenced by our genes, upbringing and our external circumstances - such as our health, our work and our financial situation. But crucially it is also heavily influenced by our choices - our inner attitudes, how we approach our relationships, our personal values and our sense of purpose. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Golden Future ~ Osho
This small book, The Greatest Challenge: The Golden Future, is unashamedly addressed to the intelligent people of this threatened planet. It is a response to the report of the United Nations from the World Commission on Environment and Development, Our Common Future, which identifies the major issues threatening the future of this planet. This book presents another facet of the Osho vision, a proposal for a viable humanity; a diagnosis of the psychological and social sicknesses that divide human beings, within and without, into warring factions. It outlines the critical steps required if there is to be any future – let alone the golden future that lies within our grasp. www.youtube.com/watch?

The Three-Minute Breathing Space Practice ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
There are three steps to the practice:
Attend to what is. The first step invites attending broadly to one’s experience, noting it, but without the need to change what is being observed.
Focus on the breath. The second step narrows the field of attention to a single, pointed focus on the breath in the body.
Attend to the body. The third step widens attention again to include the body as a whole and any sensations that are present.www.youtube.com

Happy ~ Derren Brown
Derren Brown has written a book on happiness, so it seems reasonable to assume he is something of an expert. He says he is happy, and judging by the bibliography, he has definitely read a lot on the subject. But I’m not sure the two of us agree on what happiness is. His book, Happy, advocates “contentment”, “tranquillity”, a “considered” life. It all feels so unexciting.“It doesn’t sound very joyful, does it?” Brown agrees. “But would you press the button for consistently joyful, which is clearly not real or a bit mad or exhausting, or would you press the button for a robust sense of calmness and balance?” I think, in that situation, I would hunt around for a third button, the one marked “frequent spontaneous bursts of ecstasy” – there is something listless about the thought of all that calmness – but Brown sees balance as “a much more helpful aim. I think it’s what we want.”   www.youtube.com/watch

Walking in Zen, Sitting in Zen ~ Osho
Zen is not a philosophy at all. To approach Zen as if it is a philosophy is to begin in a wrong way from the very beginning. A philosophy is something of the mind; Zen is totally beyond the mind. Zen is the process of going above the mind, far away from the mind; it is the process of transcendence, of surpassing the mind. You cannot understand it by the mind, mind has no function in it. Zen is a state of no-mind, that has to be remembered. It is not Vedanta. Vedanta is a philosophy; you can understand it perfectly well. Zen is not even Buddhism; Buddhism is also a philosophy.  www.youtube.com/watch?

Om
The syllable "om" is first described as all-encompassing mystical entity in the Upanishads. Today, in all Hindu art and all over India and Nepal, 'om' can be seen virtually everywhere, a common sign for Hinduism and its philosophy and theology. Hindus believe that as creation began, the divine, all-encompassing consciousness took the form of the first and original vibration manifesting as sound "OM".

Exhale the Stress ~ Osho
How tiring and stressful it is to worry about time. “When will this day end?” “When will the weekend come?” Osho says “The fool lives in time. The wise man lives in timelessness.” What if, instead of thinking about when happy experiences will begin and painful ones end, we enter into a space of no-time. That space is meditation. Time disappears. Space disappears. What is left is the eternal, the limitless, the incredible expanse of all that is. http://www.mentorschannel.com/Osho/

Meditation Tip 6: Letting Go ~ Jon Kabat-Zinn
If we contemplate desires and listen to them, we are actually no longer attaching to them; we are just allowing them to be the way they are. Then we come to the realisation that the origin of suffering, desire, can be laid aside and let go of.“To let go means to give up coercing, resisting, or struggling, in exchange for something more powerful and wholesome which comes out of allowing things to be as they are without getting caught up in your attraction to or rejection of them, in the intrinsic stickiness of wanting, of liking and disliking.”  www.youtube.com

The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom ~ Jonathan Haidt
“Where does happiness come from? There are several different “happiness hypotheses.” One is that happiness comes from getting what you want, but we all know (and research confirms) that such happiness is short-lived. A more promising hypothesis is that happiness comes from within and cannot be obtained by making the world conform to your desires. This idea was widespread in the ancient world: Buddha in India and the Stoic philosophers in ancient Greece and Rome all counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and counseled people to break their emotional attachments to people and events, which are always unpredictable and uncontrollable, and to cultivate instead an attitude of acceptance. This ancient idea deserves respect, and it is certainly true that changing your mind is usually a more effective response to frustration than is changing the world. However, I will present evidence that this second version of the happiness hypothesis is wrong. Recent research shows that there are some things worth striving for; there are some external conditions of life that can make you lastingly happier. One of these conditions is relatedness—the bonds we form and need to form, with others. I’ll present research showing where love comes from, why passionate love always cools, and what kind of love is “true” love. I’ll suggest that the happiness hypothesis offered by Buddha and the Stoics should be amended: Happiness comes from within, and happiness comes from without. We need the guidance of both ancient wisdom and modern science to get the balance right.” www.happinesshypothesis.com

Be Therefore Mindful ~ Osho
This sutra, from 'The Sutra of Forty-Two Chapters', has never existed in India. It never existed in Sanskrit or in Pali. This sutra exists only in Chinese. A certain Emperor Ming of the Han dynasty, AD 67, invited a few Buddhist masters to China to bring the message of Buddha there. Nobody knows the names of those Buddhist masters, but a group went to China. And the Emperor wanted a small anthology of Buddhist sayings as a first introduction to the Chinese people. Buddhist scriptures are very big, the Buddhist literature is in itself a world -- thousands of scriptures exist and they go into very great detail, because Buddha believes in logical analysis. He goes to the very root of everything. His analysis is profound and perfect, so he goes into very deep details. It was very difficult. What to translate in a totally new country where nothing like Buddha has ever existed? So these Buddhist masters composed a small anthology of forty-two chapters. The Full Sutra

She’ll share how you can live without fear ruling your thoughts and decisions. Have you ever thought about how fear affects your life? It can block us from connecting with the people we love, stifle our creativity, and cloud our judgment when we need it most. So how can we get beyond our fears to live more connected, happy, and vibrant lives? Tara has a strategy for helping people escape fear’s paralyzing hold, and you can get in on it here. Enlightenment ~ Osho
Remember, enlightenment is not somewhere else, neither in space nor in time, it is here-now. And if you hurry too much you will go astray, you will go far away. The whole thing is to slow down -- to slow down so deeply that one day NOTHING moves in you. In that very moment, in that moment of no-movement, you will become enlightened. Particularly for the Western mind speed is an obsession. They think that from the bullock cart they have come to the jet, so why can't speedy methods be developed for enlightenment? If the coffee can be instant, then why can't NIRVANA be instant? But they don't understand, because NIRVANA IS not somewhere else, otherwise it could have been possible to go with speed. It is already the case. You have to come only where you are. You have to be that which you already are. So the faster you go, the further away you will reach -- far away from enlightenment. It is not a question of reaching, it is not a question of arriving -- you have to simply slow down. And that's what the whole teaching of Tao is, and my teaching too.  www.youtube.com/watch

These Talks on Zen from 'The First Principle' Chapter 4 - Go with the River were given in 1977 in India "Listening to the song of the birds or the murmur of the wind passing through the trees, or the river, you can remain without language for a few seconds. And in those seconds will be the proof of what I have been saying to you. Suddenly you will see as if a great darkness has disappeared and everywhere is light. Sting - Fragile

Being gentle with ourselves: training the puppy ~ Dr Richard Chambers
The mind is in many ways like an untrained puppy. We want it to stay on its mat or stay in one place, but it just keeps wandering off. That's the nature of a puppy and it's the nature of our untrained minds. They might just get interested in something else and sort of wander off and have a bit of a sniff. Or maybe jump up and run off and go on the road, you know, causing problems. Or perhaps we stop paying attention for a moment. And then suddenly we're like, where's it gone, and the puppy is over in the corner chewing on a slipper or peeing in the corner. And it can cause problems for us. https://www.futurelearn.com/courses/

Going to the places that scare you ~ Pema Chodron
We always have a choice, Pema Chödrön teaches: We can let the circumstances of our lives harden us and make us increasingly resentful and afraid, or we can let them soften us and make us kinder. In this talk, Pema provides the tools to deal with the problems and difficulties that life throws our way. This wisdom is always available to us, Pema teaches, but we usually block it with habitual patterns rooted in fear. Beyond that fear lies a state of open heartedness and tenderness. This talk is a guide on how to awaken our basic goodness and connect with others, to accept ourselves and others complete with faults and imperfections, and to stay in the present moment by seeing through the strategies of ego that cause us to resist life as it is. www.youtube.com/watch

Mindfulness ~ With Jon Kabat-Zinn
Jon chats about the deeper dimensions of a mindfulness practice and the ‘self-realisation’ that unfolds as a result of the practice. He also clears up some common misconceptions about mindfulness and invites us to know for ourselves the sacredness that is inherent in the present moment. He also answers the question, ‘Is there a right way to practice?’ or ‘a right tradition?’ and gives wise advice on dealing with one of the biggest challenges in awakening.

Watching The Breath ~ Osho
Every university, every science institute, should make it absolutely necessary that anybody who graduates as a scientist has also to graduate as a meditator. And meditation will be the priority. If you cannot pass as a meditator, you cannot be allowed a science degree from the university. That's the only way -- to make every scientist a meditator so that he becomes aware in himself of deeper things -- life, love, consciousness -- and ultimately the eternity of one's being....

Essence of Meditation ~ Laurence Freeman
Meditation is a universal spiritual wisdom and a practice that we find at the core of all the great religious traditions, leading from the mind to the heart. It is a way of simplicity, silence and stillness. It can be practised by anyone from wherever you are on your life’s journey. It is only necessary to be clear about the practice and then to begin – and keep on beginning.
